AllSync editor's review — professional Windows backup and synchronization with deep feature set

AllSync from Michael Thummerer Software Design is a mature, Windows-focused backup and synchronization suite built for home users, power users and businesses. It supports modern Windows releases (including Windows 11 and recent Server editions), broad storage targets and advanced automation, making it suitable for simple one-off copies, continuous folder mirroring and complex automated backup workflows in mixed on‑prem/cloud environments.

Core capabilities and standout features

Multiple sync and copy modes: Mirror, update, two-way synchronization, backup with versioning and special modes (QuickSync) allow precise control over how changes are propagated and retained.

Wide target support: Work with local disks, NAS and mapped network shares, cloud folders mounted as drives, and remote locations via FTP, SFTP and WebDAV to enable hybrid workflows.

Open-file backups (VSS): Volume Shadow Copy Service support captures files in use without interrupting applications, essential for live server and database scenarios.

Encryption and archive support: Create space-saving ZIP archives, split large archives automatically and protect backups with AES‑256 encryption for secure offsite storage.

Automation and service operation: Integrated scheduler, folder monitoring (real-time), event triggers and the option to run as a Windows service let tasks run without interactive login.

Command-line and portable editions: Run profiles from scripts or deploy the portable package to systems without installation for flexible integration into existing processes.

Granular filters and rules: Include/exclude by name, extension, size, age, attributes or regular expressions; automatic handling of temporary files and advanced conflict rules reduce noise.

Long path and Unicode support: Handles Unicode filenames and path lengths up to 32,767 characters for modern filesystems and deep folder hierarchies.

Performance, reliability and data protection

Optimized transfer engine: Efficient file comparison minimizes unnecessary copying and speeds up repeat operations while conserving bandwidth on network targets.

Versioning and recovery: Backup generations and configurable retention keep historical versions to recover from accidental deletion or overwrite.

Integrity checks and error handling: Verification options and automatic retries improve reliability on unstable networks; detailed logs and previews help validate planned operations before execution.

BitLocker / encrypted volume handling: Automatic unlocking of BitLocker, TrueCrypt and VeraCrypt volumes before copy operations simplifies secure backup workflows.

Management, reporting and auxiliary tools

Comprehensive logging and reports: Detailed logs, HTML reports, statistics and automatic e‑mail dispatch provide audit trails for IT administrators and compliance needs.

Built-in utilities: File-Lock-Analyzer to find blocking processes, ZIP File Manager for compressed archives, Copy Method Benchmark to tune performance and central Log Manager for diagnostics.

Profile export/import and update tools: Exportable profiles simplify deploying standard jobs across multiple machines; an update tool helps keep installations current.

Usability and deployment

Job-based UI: Profiles organize source/target settings, filters, scheduling and post/pre actions with clear previews and a dry-run option to prevent surprises.

Multiple editions and licensing: Home, Pro and Business editions suit different needs with trial versions available for evaluation and licensing options for single or multi‑seat deployments.

Integration options: Command-line parameters, scripts (VBScript) before/after jobs and service mode enable server-side automation and integration into existing maintenance routines.

Who should use AllSync

Home users and enthusiasts who need reliable scheduled backups, encrypted ZIP archives and versioning for personal data protection.

Small and medium businesses requiring scheduled replication to NAS or offsite targets, open‑file backups via VSS and detailed logging for operational oversight.

IT professionals and integrators who need command-line control, portable deployment, Windows service operation and advanced filtering for automated maintenance.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strength: Extremely feature-rich with professional capabilities such as VSS, service mode, AES‑256 encrypted archives and long-path/Unicode handling.

Strength: Strong automation and monitoring features reduce manual work for recurring tasks and server backups.

Trade-off: Deep configuration options mean a learning curve for non-technical users; careful profile design is recommended for complex jobs.

Trade-off: Native focus on Windows; cloud integrations typically use standard protocols or mounted cloud folders rather than vendor-specific API integrations.

Getting started and support

Trial download: A fully functional demo is available to test AllSync’s features before purchase, with installer and portable packages provided.

Documentation and help: Extensive online documentation, context help, changelogs and examples guide setup, scheduling and migration of existing tasks.

Updates and maintenance: Regular updates and maintenance releases address compatibility, add features and improve performance across supported Windows versions.
